Melbourne to Melbourne
One of the world's most scenic drives is the Great Ocean Road, a breathtaking stretch of astonishing seascapes, landscapes and seaside towns. Journey highlights include spectacular surf beaches and popular resorts such as Lorne, a sophisticated town filled with fine restaurants, cafes and accommodation. West of Lorne lies Apollo Bay, a quiet fishing village and the gateway to the rainforest of Otway National Park.
Beyond brood the colossal natural sculptures of the southern coast, and during winter, the southern right whales at Warrnambool. Go back in time as you visit the whitewashed cottages of seafaring Port Fairy and walk its riverside dock.

Melbourne, Victoria
Self Drive Itinerary
Day 1. Melbourne to Apollo Bay.
Approx 185 km (115 miles), 2.5 hours.
Arrive in Melbourne and collect your rental vehicle. Make your way to Apollo Bay through Geelong and on to Torquay. This is where the Great Ocean Road begins its journey westward. Continue on to Apollo Bay with its wide crescent shaped sandy beach, rolling green Otway hills and laid back lifestyle. While farming and fishing are central to the local economy, Apollo Bay is continuing to build its reputation as a holiday village.
Day 2. Apollo Bay to Port Fairy.
Approx 190 km (118 miles), 2.5 hours.
Depart Apollo Bay and continue along the Great Ocean Road that travels through the Otway National Park. The Great Ocean Road leaves the Otways at Princetown and hugs the rugged coast through to the Port Campbell National Park.
Day 3. Port Fairy to Cavendish.
Approx 185 km (115 miles), 2.5 hours.
There is much to see on the journey between Port Fairy and Cavendish. The big attraction of this area is the Grampians National Park. You'll discover stunning views, hidden valleys, waterfalls, rock outcrops and Aboriginal culture. History and the lure of gold are the secrets to discover at Stawell, the home of the Stawell Gift, the richest footrace in the world. Some of Australia's leading winemakers, including Great Western and Seppelts, can also be found in the Grampians region.
Day 4. Cavendish to Ballarat.
Approx 170 km (105 miles), 2 hours.
This morning follow the highway all the way to the gold mining town of Ballarat. The area around present-day Ballarat was first settled in 1838. Ballarat's major attraction is Sovereign Hill, a fascinating re-creation of a gold-mining township of the 1860s.
Day 5. Ballarat to Melbourne.
Approx 117 km (73 miles), 1.5 hours.
As Melbourne is only a short drive away, you may like to take your time to further explore the Ballarat region. Travel southeast to Melbourne. Upon arrival in Melbourne drop off your rental vehicle. Depart Melbourne.
