Via Wilpena Pound and Clare Valley
Self Drive Itinerary
Day 1. Adelaide to Wilpena Pound.
Pick up your car then drive to Wilpena Pound, in the heart of the Flinders Ranges. Two nights at Wilpena Pound Resort.
Day 2. Wilpena Pound.
Day at leisure at Wilpena Pound covering 83 square kilometres in the more remote, undeveloped northern section of the Flinders Ranges, 400 kilometres north of Adelaide. Wilpena Pound rises as an immense, crater-like fusion of stark purple ridges and overhanging bluffs, strewn with tough and colourful vegetation, in jarring contrast to the flatness of the surrounding plains.
The interior of the Pound has been a stamping-ground for hiking enthusiasts for decades. The kangaroos and euros (small wallaby-like marsupials) bound between rampantly yellow wattle trees (in spring). Pampas grass, wildflowers (the best blooming season is spring) and other flora making for a scene reminiscent of the 'lost world'.
In season you'll find the brilliant reds and pinks of Sturt's Desert Pea, Flinders Ranges Bottlebrush, Hopbush and Sturt's Desert Rose.
Day 3. Wilpena Pound to Parachilna.
Depart Wilpena today and head north to the small outback town of Parachilna, about one and a half hours away. Parachilna has an official population of just seven but its remoteness adds to the pleasure of its one and only hotel.
The prairie Hotel is truly an oasis on the plains of the Flinders Ranges, some of the most ancient and fascinating formations on earth. From the hotel, you can enjoy magnificent views of both the Ranges and the vast red desert plains sweeping toward Lake Torrens. Inside the hotel, you'll find great character, charm and creature comforts - topped off with superb cuisine.
All this is only 30 minutes drive from the famous Parachilna and Brachina Gorges of the Flinders Ranges National Park. Overnight in Prairie Hotel.
Day 4. Parachilna to Clare Valley.
Leave the lovely town of Parachilna this morning and head south to the Clare Valley. Irish immigrants originally settled the area, and today it is the centre for an important pastoral industry and home to many acclaimed cool climate wines. The region consists of seven small valleys, which are the northern section of the Mt. Lofty Ranges. Overnight in either Quality Resorts 'Economy or Thorn Park' First.
Day 5. Clare Valley to Adelaide.
Enjoy visiting the wineries of the Clare Valley before heading back to Adelaide, take a detour and stop in for more wine tasting or a lovely lunch in the Barossa Valley. Leave your self drive tour here.
