Bolivia is a landlocked country and is sometimes referred to as the “Tibet of South America” due to its high altitude. It was named after Simon Bolivar who played a key role in obtaining independence from Spain for a number of South American countries. It was also an important part of the ancient Inca civilization. As a country, it has a drastic variety of terrain and climate while on a Bolivia vacation. The constitutional capital is Sucre but the seat of government is in La Paz.

La Paz is most certainly the best-known city in Bolivia. It is situated at its lowest point at 3100 metres/10,100 feet and at its highest at 4100 metres/13,300 feet. In fact, it is the highest capital in the world. One of the interesting things about the city is that the further south and lower one travels, the more affluent are the neighbourhoods. There is still much colonial-style architecture to be seen here. Some of the highlights are the Cathedral, Plaza Murillo, the Government Palace and Calle Jaen, a street which takes you back to colonial days with restaurants, shops selling handicrafts and several museums, all to be enjoyed on Bolivia vacations.

Just outside La Paz is the Valle dl la Luna (Valley of the Moon) where clay rocks have been weathered and corroded over time into interesting and unusual formations with the light striking them to create different colours.

The largest city in population is actually Santa Cruz which is situated at a very low altitude in Central Bolivia. It is an economically prosperous city.

Sucre, the constitutional capital, is an elegant city, colonial in style with many historic buildings and an exciting cathedral plus many churches. It has a relaxed atmosphere and is a pleasant walkable city. While on a Bolivia vacation, visit here the Casa de la Libertad with its paintings and objects relating to Bolivian history.

Potosi in the south is one of the highest cities in the world at 4100 metres/13,300 feet. It was made famous due to its lucrative silver mines. A visit to a mine can be done.

Lake Titicaca in the far north of the country is partly in Bolivia and partly Peru. It is the highest navigable lake in the world and the largest in South America. The Incas regarded it as sacred, as according to their mythology, the first Inca king was born here. Visit the Isla del Sol (Island of the Sun) and inspect the more than 180 Inca ruins dating back to the 15th Century AD. Another highlight here on a Bolivia vacation is Tiahuanaco, an important pre-Columbian archeological site and known as the “Cradle of American Civilization”.
