Glorious Ghana

  • Originally built by European traders, the Cape Coast Castle became a notorious "Slave Castle"

This 8-day tour gets off the beaten track and explores Ghana a West African nation with a long history of warriors, unique art and amazing nature. West Africa is still unspoiled by mass tourism and a trip to Ghana will not disappoint.

Arrive in Accra, Ghana’s busy capital city. You will transfer to your hotel and enjoy a welcome group and orientation session. The next day gets your group out and about exploring the highlights of the city as well as an open aircraft market.

The next day head to Cape Coast. Along the way, you will visit several castles and forts, many of which played a part in Ghana’s dark history with the slave trade. Millions of Africans were held in these forts before being forcibly shipped to other countries. Also visit the Elmina Castle, which was built by the Portuguese in 1482 and has fabulous views of the coast.

A little inland, Ghana has some truly stunning rainforests. Spend a day at Kakum National Park and take the famous canopy walk over the forest or enjoy a 2km nature walk learning about the local flora and fauna. The next day you will head for Kumasi, the centre of the Ashanti Empire.

The Ashanti have a long history of craftsmanship in bronze and textiles and are also viewed as some of Africa’s most formidable warriors, successfully fighting back against British colonizers for two hundred years. Stops at the Manhyia Palace Museum and National Cultural Centre in Kumasi are an eye-opening experience.

Over the next two days, you will visit several craft villages and the Besease Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site showcasing traditional Ashanti architecture. Each of the homes is said to be home to a spirit. You will then return to Accra. Your final morning will be spent at the School of the Deaf for a traditional dance performance.

Return to the airport for your onward travels.
