What language is spoken in Botswana?

The official language of Botswana is English, however, English is generally spoken as a second language by most of the country’s residents. The most commonly spoken language is Setswana. 

What currency is used in Botswana?

The official currency used in Botswana is the Pula. USD, Euros, UK pounds and South African rands are also accepted. Major international credit cards are accepted at most hotels and there are also ATMs available throughout Botswana, dispensing local currency.

Do I need a visa and passport to travel to Botswana?

Botswana currently offers visa-free travel to all countries for stays up to 90 days. A valid passport is mandatory. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date you expect to leave Botswana.

When is the best time to visit Botswana?

Botswana experiences two distinct seasons; hot, wet summers and cool, dry winters. The average temperatures during the summer months (from October-April) hover around 40 ̊C. These months are very humid and are when much of the country’s rainfall is expected. The winter months (May-September) are characterized by clear, sunny days with warm temperatures averaging between 27 ̊C - 35 ̊C. The best time to visit would be during the winter months when pleasant weather is expected and the humidity is minimal. This is also the best time to view wildlife as herds of animals begin to migrate. 

Is Botswana a family-friendly destination?

There are plenty of kid-friendly activities in Botswana that the entire family will enjoy. Botswana has many national parks and animal reserves to enjoy wildlife safaris and game viewing. For active families, there is also the Lion Park Resort with its many attractions, water slides, restaurants and bars.

How welcoming is Botswana to LGBTQ travellers ? 

A High Court ruling in June 2019 saw Botswana become the latest African country to decriminalize homosexuality and gender diversity. Like most other African nations, however, conservative beliefs still exist. All visitors are advised to maintain an understanding of the cultural sensitivity around this issue. All travellers, regardless of orientation who exercise discretion and sensitivity toward local customs are welcome to enjoy the hospitality and beauty of Botswana.

What vaccinations are required or suggested for travel to Botswana?

There are no compulsory vaccinations required for Botswana, however, we recommend you consult with your local travel clinic for the most up-to-date recommendations, particularly in regards to malaria prophylactics. Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required if you are coming from or have transited through an airport of a country where yellow fever occurs.
