Ethiopia Weather
Located between the Equator and the Tropic of Cancer, Ethiopia is considered a tropical zone. It can be divided into three zones: Kolla, Woina dega, and Dega. Kolla is a tropical zone found below 1,830 m (6,003.93 ft) in elevation. Average annual temperatures in this zone are 27˚C (80.6˚F). The Woina dega zone is subtropical in the highland areas with an average annual temperature of 22˚C (71.6˚F). Finally, the Dega zone is a cool zone that is located above 2,440 m (8,005.24 ft) in elevation with average annual temperatures of 16˚C (60.8˚F).
Ethiopia experiences four seasons throughout the year. Summer typically runs from June to August. This is the monsoon season so heavy rains and thunderstorms are regular occurrences. Spring is from September to November, which is harvest season in Ethiopia. Winter is from December to February and is cooler than other times of the year. This is considered Ethiopia’s dry season. Autumn is from March to May and these months experience occasional showers.
