Israel Geography and Maps
Located in the Middle East, Israel borders the Mediterranean Sea as well as Lebanon to the north, Jordan to the east, and Egypt to the south and to the west. Geographically, Israel is divided into three different regions lengthwise: the coastal plain, the mountain region and the Jordan Valley Rift.
The coastal plain of Israel stretches from Rosh Ha-Nikra in the north to the Sinai Peninsula to the south. It is very densely populated with most of the country’s major cities located there, including Tel Aviv and Haifa. The coastal plain can be divided into four plains from north to south.
The mountain region is from Lebanon in the north to Eliat Bay in the south and is located between the coastal plains and the Jordan Valley Rift. The main ranges are the Galilee in the north, the Carmel, the hills of Samaria, the Judaen Hills and the Negev Highlands. Along with the mountains and hills are two valleys, the Yizre’el Valley and the Be’er Sheva-Arad Rift.
Finally, the Jordan Valley Rift stretches the entire length of Israel. The Jordan Valley Rift is actually made up of five different valleys. Israel’s two lakes, the freshwater Kinneret and the salt water Dead Sea (the lowest point on earth) are found there, while Israel’s longest river, the Jordan River flows through. The Golan Heights region is east of the Jordan River and is home to Israel’s highest peak, Mount Hermon at 2,224 m (7,796.58 ft).
