Social Conventions

The people of Kenya are known for being extremely polite and helpful. It is not uncommon to hear “Jambo!” or “Hakuna matata” which respectively mean “Hello” and “No worries” in Swahili. Shaking hands is the most common form of greeting and is almost always followed by asking about the health, the family or the business of the other person. It is considered very poor manners to rush or skip this. It is also considered rude to lose one’s temper or to shout. It is courteous to ask before taking pictures, and in some remote areas, a small token or payment for the photo is sometimes expected simply as a form of polite appreciation.

Language

Swahili (or Kiswahili) is the national language of Kenya, however, English is taught in all schools and is the official language of business, government, and education. There are over forty ethnic communities in Kenya that speak close to eighty different languages. Many people speak Swahili as their second language.

Religion

The majority of the population in Kenya are Christians, however, Hinduism, Sikhism, and indigenous religions are also represented.
