What language is spoken in Madagascar?

The official languages of Madagascar are Malagasy and French.

Is English spoken throughout Madagascar?

English will be spoken by some in major tourist areas. However, do not assume everyone you meet will be able to converse in English. 

What currency is used in Madagascar?

The currency used throughout the country is the Malagasy ariary. Credit cards are accepted at most upscale hotels, restaurants and shops. There are ATMs in most major cities as well as airports dispensing local currency. 

Do I need a visa and passport to travel to Madagascar?

A visa is required to travel to the country as a tourist from Canada and the United States. It can be obtained prior to travelling or on arrival in Madagascar and is valid for 90 days. A valid passport for travel is mandatory. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the date you enter Madagascar. 

When is the best time to travel to Madagascar?

The best time to visit the country is from April to mid-December, avoiding the wet season.

Is there transportation within Madagascar?

The main form of transportation within Madagascar is the taxi brousse. In a country of small group and or private travel, large vans and sedans are often used. 

Is Madagascar a family-friendly destination?

Families with children under ten may struggle with the overall conditions of travelling within the country. Active families with teen age children and an adventurous spirit will have an amazing time exploring Madagascar.       

How welcoming is Madagascar to LGBTQ travellers?

While homosexuality has never been illegal in Madagascar, the country is not as accepting of LGBTQ rights as some others in Africa. They ask that all visitors maintain an understanding of cultural sensitivity concerning this issue. Discretion is to be practised regardless of orientation in sites of antiquity, as well as during day-to-day touring, but Madagascar welcomes all to its beautiful shores.   

What vaccinations are suggested or required for travel to Madagascar? 

There are no compulsory vaccinations required for Madagascar, however, we recommend you consult with your local travel clinic for the most up-to-date recommendations, particularly in regard to malaria prophylactics. Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required if you are coming from or have transited through an airport of a country where yellow fever occurs.
