Malawi Culture


Social Conventions

The people of Malawi are known for being incredibly friendly and family is very important. Shaking hands is the traditional form of greeting, with the local population having their own version. When dining, it tends to be done without utensils, but one must remember to eat only with the right hand, as the left hand is considered dirty.

 

Language

Both English and Chichewa are the official languages of Malawi, however, other indigenous languages are also spoken. English is the language of business with Chichewa spoken widely around the country.

 

Religion

Christianity is the main religion in Malawi with the majority of the population identifying as Christian. The next major religion is Islam.
