What language is spoken in Mozambique?

The official language of Mozambique is Portuguese. There are also over 60 different dialects of Bantu languages. English is generally spoken in lodges and hotels. 

What currency is used in Mozambique?

The official currency is the Mozambican metical. US Dollars and South African rand are also widely accepted. Mastercard and Visa are accepted at most top-end hotels, restaurants and tourist shops. ATMs are available in larger cities.

Do I need a visa and passport to travel to Mozambique?

A visa is required to enter the country when travelling as a tourist from Canada or the United States. We recommend that you acquire your visa prior to arrival, although obtaining it upon arrival is possible. A passport is mandatory for travel and must be valid for at least six months after the departure date. 

When is the best time to travel to Mozambique?

The best time to visit Mozambique is between May and October when the weather is dry and slightly less hot, although it will likely still be in the high 20s. The wet summer season run from December to April, although the rainfall is typically in the form of short downpours, with the rest of the time being very warm. Note, cyclone season in Southern Mozambique is in January and February and torrential rains may be experienced during this time. 

Is there transportation within Mozambique?

Visitors typically pre-book a package prior to arriving in Mozambique. This package includes the services of an English-speaking driver-guide and a 4X4 vehicle, which in turn will be their primary mode of transportation. For those short on time and who prefer less driving, there is also the option of flying between destinations on small aircraft to the local airstrips and return. The three main airport hubs are Maputo International Airport, Vilanculos International Airport, and Pemba International Airport. These offer flight connections from South Africa, Kenya, and Tanzania. Once you’re at the beach, travelling to the islands is easy by boat, light aircraft, or helicopter.  

Is Mozambique a family friendly destination? 

Mozambique, with its watersports, marine life and family beach options, is suitable for fairly active families with slightly older children. 

How welcoming is Mozambique to LGBTQ travellers ?

Mozambique, a former Portuguese colony is relatively progressive when it comes to LGBTQ rights, although some conservative attitudes exist. Homosexual acts were legalized in 2015, but all visitors are still expected to maintain an understanding of cultural sensitivity concerning this issue. Regardless of orientation, discretion should be practised at sites of antiquity as well as during day-to-day touring. 

What if any vaccinations are required or suggested for travel to Mozambique? 

There are no compulsory vaccinations required for Mozambique, however, we recommend you consult with your local travel clinic for the most up-to-date recommendations, particularly in regard to malaria prophylactics. Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required if you are coming from or have transited through an airport of a country where yellow fever occurs.
