Rwanda Geography and Maps
Rwanda is located in the heart of Central and East Africa and shares borders with Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo, making it a landlocked country. Rwanda is 120 km (75 mi) south of the equator, in the Tropic of Capricorn.
Rwanda has been nicknamed ‘the land of a thousand hills as the country is very mountainous. The highest peak is Mount Karisimbi which stands at 4,507 m (14,786 ft), located in the volcanic Virunga Chain. The Virunga Mountains are home to the greatest concentration of nearly extinct mountain gorillas and are part of the great rift system. The further east the chain stretches, the altitude declines and is characterized by grassy hills.
The geography of Rwanda can be divided into six regions from west to east. They are the Great Rift Valley, the volcanic Virunga Mountains, the Zaire-Nile Divide which has an average elevation of 2,750 m (9,000 ft), the Central Plateaus east of the mountains, and finally, the eastern and southeastern border areas that make up one-tenth of the nation’s land area, characterized by savannah and swamp lands.
