Seychelles Geography and Maps
The Seychelles Archipelago occupies 400,000 square kilometres (140,000 square miles) of the Indian Ocean, northeast of Madagascar. It is composed of 115 granite and coral islands and atolls that extend between 4-10˚ south of the equator. The 41 inner islands constitute the oldest mid-oceanic granite islands on the earth. The other 74 form five different groups of low-lying coral atolls and reef islands. These groups are known as the outer islands and they are generally smaller and almost entirely flat. Most of the outer islands have no water and only a few are inhabited.
Approximately 90% of the total population of Seychelles lives on the main island Mahé. Mahé is 27km (16.7 mi) long and 12km (7.54 mi) wide and its total land area is 154 square kilometres. Most of the population occupies areas to the north and east of the island. The island is the largest of all in the archipelago and is quite mountainous. Seychelles’ highest point, Morne Seychellois at 905 m (2,969 ft) is located on Mahé.
