Social Conventions

Handshaking is the traditional greeting between people of the same sex in Tunisia. When members of the opposite sex meet, males should wait to see if females offer their hands to shake, if not, males should simply bow. If invited to a Tunisian home, it is considered polite to bring a small gift (pastries, nuts, fruit, cake, candy and flowers are all ideal suggestions). Visitors should not bring alcohol as Tunisia is a primarily Muslim country and hosts may not drink. Guests should remove their shoes before entering a house and when dining, should wait for the host to bless the food before eating (or wait until the host begins eating). One should always eat with the right hand, and it is considered good manners to try a bit of everything. Finally, it is important to show respect for the practices and policies associated with Islam, especially when visiting religious places - shoulders and knees should be covered.

Language

Arabic is the official language of Tunisia, while French is traditionally the language of commerce. Other languages commonly spoken in tourist areas include English, German and Italian.

Religion

The majority of the population in Tunisia is Muslim, however, there are other religions with minority followings including Roman Catholicism, Protestantism and Judaism.
