What language(s) are spoken in Zimbabwe?
Zimbabwe has 16 official languages, the main four of which are English, Afrikaans, Shona and Isindebele.
What currency is used in Zimbabwe?
Zimbabwe has introduced a new local currency, the Zimbabwean Dollar, however, US Dollars and South African rand are also accepted. Zimbabwe is currently experiencing a cash shortage, so it is advisable that you bring some cash. It is recommended that some of your money be in small denominations to pay for national park fees, souvenirs, gratuities and sundries. American Express, MasterCard and Visa credit cards are widely accepted. ATMs are not common, and when there is one, it is rare for it to have any money and if any, a very limited amount.
Do I need a visa and passport to travel to Zimbabwe?
A visa is required to enter the country as a tourist. Currently, one can be acquired upon arrival at airports or border crossing in a single or multi-visit format. A valid passport is mandatory and it must be valid for a further six months.
When is the best time to travel to Zimbabwe?
Zimbabwe is a year-round destination. The dry winter season (May to October) is especially good for game-viewing. The temperatures are mild with little to no rainfall, and there is a lower malaria risk. Water levels of Victoria Falls vary throughout the year, being at their highest between April and June, and their lowest from October to December. Summer occurs from October to April and can be characterized as having sunny mornings with some showers in the afternoon.
Is there transportation within Zimbabwe?
There are several scheduled flights connecting Harare, Victoria Falls, Bulawayo, Hwange and other Zimbabwe locations. Scheduled seat-in-plane charter flights connect the main tourist areas and national parks. A range of transportation for small and private groups as well as larger tour departures is available on comfortable motor coach vehicles.
Is Zimbabwe a family-friendly destination?
With so many outdoor activities, beautiful scenery and exotic animals, the whole family can enjoy this destination. Camping and lodge holidays are very popular as well as a few days in Victoria Falls. Zimbabwe offers adventure for all ages.
How welcoming is Zimbabwe to LGBTQ travellers?
Male homosexual acts are illegal in Zimbabwe and conservative beliefs still prevail. Female homosexual acts have never been criminalized, but visitors should be mindful of local sensibilities, particularly in rural areas. Zimbabwe has had a tumultuous time since the Mugabe regime ended in 2017. As the country regains political stability, the subject of LGBTQ rights is expected to be on the agenda, but no reforms have yet been proposed. Visitors are advised to practice discretion while enjoying this beautiful country.
What if any vaccinations are required or suggested for travel to Zimbabwe?
There are no compulsory vaccinations required for Zimbabwe, however, we recommend you consult with your local travel clinic for the most up-to-date recommendations, particularly in regard to malaria prophylactics. Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required if you are coming from or have transited through an airport of a country where yellow fever occurs.
