Weather and climate in Bhutan depend upon and vary with altitude. The climate in Bhutan can be divided into three different types based on regions. The foothills of the Himalayans and plains in the extreme south are humid and subtropical with temperatures ranging from 15 to 30˚C. The central regions and the Himalayan valleys to the north experience a temperate climate. Finally, the north of Bhutan experiences extreme cold with some mountain peaks facing snow all year round.

Rainfall can also be determined by region. The Himalayan region sees less than 500 mm of rain a year. The Inner Central Valleys experience 500-1000mm each year while the southern foothills see 2000-3500mm per year. Finally, the southern border area sees upwards of 3000-5000mm a year.

Seasons in Bhutan can be split into five distinct times of the year. Spring runs from early March to mid-April. These months tend to be dry and not as affected by rain. Summer is from mid-April to late June and experiences occasional showers. The traditional summer season is followed by the summer monsoon season from late June to late September with monsoon days having high humidity and often misty. Autumn is from late September or early October to late November and the days are characterized by bright sunny days with some snow at higher elevations. Winter is from late November to March with frosty days and snowfalls in places above 3,000m elevation.
