From mountains to plains, waterfalls to rivers and lakes, Cambodia is home to a diverse array of wildlife. There are approximately 212 mammal and animal species located there including Asian elephants, a variety of cats including clouded leopards, Indochinese tigers, Asian golden cats, wild dogs like the dhole as well as bears like the Malayan sun bear to name a. There are also approximately 536 bird species found in Cambodia including the endangered Sarus Crane, parrots, pheasants and wild ducks. The Tonle Sap Lake area is home to over 850 freshwater fish species, while over 435 marine species are found in Cambodia. Much of this wildlife is threatened, therefore many groups throughout the country have been established with the goal of educating the public on how to conserve and preserve the incredible nature and wildlife on offer in Cambodia.

The Tonle Sap Biosphere is a unique ecological phenomenon that surrounds the great Tonle Sap Lake as well as nine of Cambodia’s provinces. It has three main goals, to conserve the biodiversity of the area, to foster sustainable development of the environment and to provide educational training and research opportunities. The area was successfully nominated as a UNESCO Biosphere in 1997.

The Central Cardamom Protected Forest is one of the largest and one of the last explored forests in Southeast Asia. Approximately one-third of the area is protected land and the Global Conservation Fund works onsite to provide immediate protection against illegal logging and hunting activities. Within the forest, there are thought to be over 100 mammals, while the mountains surrounding it provide shelter for 62 globally threatened animals and 17 globally threatened tree species. It is also home to the largest population of Asian elephants in Cambodia (possibly the whole of Indochina).

Osmose is a nonprofit pilot conservation and development endeavour in three floating villages in the Prek Toal area. This project is very important in aiding the survival of several endangered water birds. The goal is to link the preservation of birds to the sustainable development of local communities. Over 130 families benefit from Osmose and they have so managed to save seven birds from extinction.

The above-mentioned programs are only a sample of the great conservation work that is currently happening throughout Cambodia.
