Due to the size of China, the climate varies greatly depending on location, therefore, weather can be divided into the following climatic regions: north and northeast, northwest, central, south and Tibet.

To the north and northeastern parts of the country, winter can be very cold with areas north of the Great Wall experiencing -40˚C, while the summer months can be hot and dry.

The northwestern part of China experiences extreme winters with cold temperatures and snow. The summer months see very little rainfall and are hot and dry. However, during the spring and autumn, when the sun goes down, temperatures can drop drastically making evenings cool.

The central regions of China enjoy long, hot and humid summers while winters are relatively short, but are known for being wet and cold. Spring is quite mild despite being wet and autumn is deemed the best time to visit central China.

The south of China is hot and humid from April to September with temperatures reaching 38˚C (100.4˚F). Typhoons hit the southwestern coast during the rainy season (July to September). Winters are short in this region, usually, from January to March and while not as cold as the north, warm clothes are still required.

It has been said that one can experience all four seasons in one day in Tibet. Temperatures can reach below 0˚C (32˚F) in the early morning and in the evenings but can get to 38˚C (100.4˚F) by midday. Winter is very cold and the wind in Tibet is extreme. July and August are considered the best times to visit Tibet as they offer warmer temperatures, a great deal of sunshine and many festivals.
