India Geography and Maps
With a population of 1.28, India is one of the most populous nations in the world, falling slightly behind China. Bordering Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, China, Nepal and Pakistan, with an area of 3,287,590 square kilometres (1,269,346 square miles), India is the seventh largest country in the world. The country is divided into twenty-eight states, the largest being Rajasthan while the smallest is Goa.
The physical geography of India can be divided into six natural regions:
The Himalayas: this mountain range is home to the highest mountains in the world. Mount Everest, located in the Nepal portion of the Himalayas is the highest peak, while India’s highest peak is Kanchenjunga at 8,598m (28,209ft).
The Indo-Gangetic Plain: this plain lies at the foothills of the Himalayas and is dominated by the Brahmaputra, Indus and Ganges rivers. The Ganges River is the longest river in India.
The Central Plateau: also known as the Malwa Plateau, this area divides north and south India.
The Deccan Plateau: is triangular-shaped and is bordered on the east and west by mountain ranges known as the Eastern and Western Ghats.
The East Coast: lies between the Eastern Ghat and the Bay of Bengal.
The West Coast: lies between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea and is characterized by many lagoons.
