The nation of Japan is home to 126,434,964 people and consists of several thousand islands with four main islands: Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku. Japan’s neighbours are Korea, Russia and China while the Sea of Japan separates Japan from the Asian continent. Japan is divided politically into eight regions and forty-two prefectures and has a total area of 377,944 square kilometres.

The landscape is dominated by mountains and much of the country is covered in forests. The Chubu Region of central Honshu has been nicknamed the “Roof of Japan” because its mountain range sees peaks reach more than 3,000m high. The tallest and most famous mountain in Japan is Mount Fuji standing at 3,776m (12,388ft) is found in the Chubu Region. The mountains in Japan contain 10% of the world’s active volcanoes with Mount Fuji being a dormant volcano.

Due to its location near the Japan trench - where the Pacific and North American plates meet - Japan experiences frequent earthquakes, however, earthquakes occur more often than they are felt. Unfortunately, this was not the case in March 2011 when an earthquake triggered a tsunami that devastated the nation.

There are many rivers that criss-cross Japan. While not very long, these rivers are steep and swift and many are not suitable for navigation. Despite this, the rapid flow that comes from the mountains provides a valuable, renewable resource: hydroelectric power generation.

There are also many long, sandy beaches in Japan and the nation is one of the most densely populated in the world.
