The official language of the Maldives is Maldivian (Dhivehi).

English is widely spoken throughout the country, especially in resort areas as well as Male. 

What currency is used in the Maldives?

The currency used throughout the Maldives is Maldivian rufiyaa however the Euro and the US dollar are also widely accepted. All major credit cards can be used at resorts, restaurants, and shops in Male and several other islands. Withdrawing money from ATMs is not usually possible.  

Do I need a Visa to travel to the Maldives?

To enter the Maldives no pre-arrival visa is required as one will be issued upon arrival in the country. 

When is the best time to travel to the Maldives?

The Maldives is warm and sunny all year round with the high season being between December and March. The monsoon season occurs from May to October so it is not the best time to travel. 

Is there transportation in the Maldives?

All islands within the Maldives are small enough to be covered by foot however, taxis do operate in the larger islands to get to and from the resort and airport.

The Maldives are known as the perfect honeymoon location or romantic getaway but that doesn’t mean the whole family can’t enjoy the beauty of the islands. Kid-friendly hotels can be somewhat difficult to come by but those that exist will ensure your little ones will be entertained the whole time! 

How welcoming is the Maldives to LGBTQ travellers?

The Maldives is a conservative Muslim country and homosexual acts are illegal  Discretion is advised at the airport as well as in Male and other local destinations. With that said, most resorts in the Maldives are very welcoming to LGBTQ travellers. The country relies heavily on tourism, and visitors are unlikely to experience harassment or discrimination at their resort. The Maldives is becoming an increasingly popular destination for LGBTQ travellers.

What voltage and power outlet is used in the Maldives? 

The standard voltage used in the Maldives is 220-240 volts. The power outlets are mostly the same as the 3-pin style used in the United Kingdom. Though some of the resorts may have outlets for shavers or a converter on hand, we recommend you travel on your own just in case.

What should I buy to bring home from the Maldives?

Dhoni crafts (miniatures of the traditional Dhoni boats), mat weavings known as Thundu Kunaa, lacquer works in the form of a jewelry box or utensils, and red coral jewelry are among the popular items to bring back from a trip to the Maldives.

What are some important items to pack for the Maldives?

As the Maldives is a Muslim country you will want to dress modestly if you plan to spend time outside of your resort; on an inhabited island or if staying in Male, so a cover-up, pants, or a long skirt and long sleeve tops are good to bring.

What is the wifi like in the Maldives?

WiFi in the Maldives is commonly complimentary in hotels and resorts. That being said, some resorts only offer complimentary WiFi in the main areas of the property (lobby, restaurants, bars, etc.)
