What language is spoken in Mongolia?

The official and most widely spoken language in Mongolia is Mongolian. The two Mongolic dialects spoken are Oirat and Buryat. English is also commonly spoken among Mongolians.

What currency is used in Mongolia?

The official currency used in Mongolia is the Mongolian Tögrög (or Tukrik). While the Tukrik is the most widely used among Mongolian residents, USD and EUR are also acceptable forms of currency in some areas. 

How long does it take to get to Mongolia?

There are no direct flights from North America to Mongolia. There are flights leaving from Toronto (YYZ) followed by two connecting flights in Virginia or Detroit and in Beijing. The total travel time is approximately 25 hours. There are also several locations in the USA that service flights to Mongolia. Again, there are generally one or two stops involved.

Do I need a Visa to travel to Mongolia?

Mongolia offers visa-free travel to citizens from select countries. Canadian citizens may travel without obtaining a visa for 30 days. US citizens may travel for up to 90 days without obtaining a visa. Some other countries are required to obtain a visa prior to travel, and some may obtain a visa upon arrival.

When is the best time to travel to Mongolia?

Mongolia experiences 4 clear-cut seasons. Winters are long, usually lasting about 6 months (November-April), and are also cold with temperatures reaching as low as - 40°C at night. The best time to travel is in the summer months when the weather is warmer. The Gobi Desert in the summer experiences dry air, hot sand and extremely high temperatures, upwards of +40°C. With the summer being considered the busiest period, there are often fewer travellers in the spring and fall (May, September and October), however, temperatures may vary from day to day. Mongolia on average does not experience much rainfall. The months with the heaviest rainfall are July and August where rain is expected on 50% of the days.

Is Mongolia a good place for families?

Mongolia has plenty of activities to offer that will cater to the entire family. Families can enjoy a nature-filled hike and spot wild horses at one of the many National Parks, including the Hustai National Park and Khustain Nuruu Nature Reserve. Rainforests, springs and dunes can be explored in the Gobi Desert. Other activities include viewing fossils at the Central Museum of Mongolian Dinosaurs or a visit to Sukhbaatar Square in UlaanBaatar with its many museums, shops, and several cultural institutions.
