Social Conventions

In Myanmar, respect and courtesy for tradition and religion are expected, therefore when visiting sacred sites, other than socks and stockings, footwear is not permitted. Visitors should dress modestly in public places and at religious sites. The head is considered the most sacred part of the body and so to pat someone (even children) on the head is considered offensive. In Myanmar, apart from the clergy, age is the most important thing when it comes to social standing and so respect for elders is very important. Finally, there are some restrictions when it comes to photography, mainly at airports, ports and harbours. It is always best to ask for permission before taking photos of people.

Language

Myanmar (Burmese) is the official language and there are approximately 111 dialects spoken throughout the country. English is traditionally spoken in business settings.

Religion

Approximately 89% of the population follows Theravada Buddhism. Christianity represents 5%, Islam represents 4%, Hinduism represents 0.5%, Spiritualism represents 1% while 0.5% of the population follow other minority religions.

NATS

Burmese continue to worship the "Nat" (spirit), a link to pre Buddhism era when animism (associated with trees, lakes, and hills) held undisputed dominion over the land.

A Nat can be anything that may hold dominion over a place, person, or experience. Nationally there are 37 official Nats comprised of heroes and antiheroes. Most have met their deaths in tragic circumstances - war, alcohol, drugs, murder. Burmese people put great hope in Nats (to keep on their side) and have Nat shrines in their homes.
