Myanmar Geography and Maps
With a population of 51,419,420 people, Myanmar covers an area of about 676,578 sq km (260,000 sq mi). It is located between Bangladesh and Thailand with India and China to the north.
Myanmar is a land of hills and valleys. It is also a land of mountains with ranges in the north, east and west parts of the country. The three main mountain ranges are the Arakan Yoma Range, the Bago Yoma Range and the Shan Plateau. The Arakan Yoma Range has peaks that range between 915 m (3,000 ft) and 1,525 m (5,000 ft). The Bago Yoma is a range of low mountains and hills located in central Myanmar. At 1,518 m (4,980 ft) Mount Popa is the highest point in the range. The Shan Plateau is located in eastern Myanmar and averages about 914 m (3,000 ft) in elevation. Although sparsely populated, the Shan Plateau is the primary source of sapphires and rubies in Myanmar.
The highest point in Myanmar is Hkakabo Razi located in northern Myanmar. Hkakabo Razi is part of an outlying subrange of the Greater Himalayans and at 5,881 m (19,295 ft) is the highest point in Southeast Asia. Within the mountain ranges are the flat lands of Ayeyarwaddy, Chindwin and Sittaung River valleys which make up most of Myanmar’s agricultural land as well as the population.
There are three main river systems in Myanmar - the Irrawaddy, the Salween and the Seftaung Rivers. The Irrawaddy is the longest river and is approximately 2,170 km (1348 mi). The Irrawaddy River system is one of the most important geographical features in Myanmar due to the extremely fertile land that surrounds it. There is 3000km of navigable river in Myanmar. A huge fleet of riverboats, remnants of the old Irrawaddy Flotilla Company, ply the country's rivers.
Almost half of Myanmar is covered in forests. These forests are made up of a variety of trees including teak, cinchona, acacia, bamboo, ironwood, mangrove, coconut and palm. The northern highlands consist of oak, and pine as well as many varieties of rhododendron. Many trees in Myanmar’s coastal region offer various tropical fruits including citrus fruits, bananas, mangoes and guavas.
