Social Conventions

When visiting the Philippines, there are some social norms that should be followed that will aid in a successful trip. Initial greetings tend to be quite formal and protocol dictates that the eldest, or most important person is met first, and a handshake is suitable. It is considered polite to bring flowers or sweets to the host when invited for dinner (however, chrysanthemums and white lilies should be avoided). Guests should always wait to be told where to sit in case a seating plan is in place. Casual dress is acceptable in most areas, but when visiting Muslim areas, visitors should cover up.

Language

Filipino is the official language of the Philippines, however, it is spoken by just over half of the population. English is used for educational, governmental and commercial purposes and is widely understood while there are an additional 170 indigenous languages spoken. Taglish is a mixture of English and Filipino words and phrases.

Religion

After Spanish Roman Catholic missionaries converted the islands to Christianity in the 16th century, it remained the predominant religion. Today, with 83% of the population following Christianity, the Philippines is the fourth largest Catholic state in the world. The Protestant Church is followed by 8% of the population, while 5% are Muslim and a further 3% identify as Buddhist with 1% listing other.
