Singapore Geography and Maps
Singapore is made up of one main island and approximately sixty-three other surrounding islands and islets located between Malaysia and Indonesia. There are three major geographical regions found in Singapore. There is a central hilly region that houses heavy granite deposits as well as the highest point in the country, Bukit Timah which is a hill rather than a mountain and stands at 166m (544 ft). The western and southwestern parts of the country are made up of sedimentary rocks while the eastern part is largely flat and sandy.
There are mangrove swamps located along the coasts, particularly in the northern and western regions, however, as Singapore has continuously faced urbanization, many of the mangroves have been drained and filled and much of the hilly region has been flattened. A great deal of the islets that surround the country has been enlarged to allow for industrial estates to be built. Using earth from the hills, the seabed and even from neighbouring countries,
Singapore has expanded over the years through reclaimed land. The land area has increased from 581.5 square km (224.5 square mi) in the 1960s to 704 square km (272 square mi) currently, and could potentially grow by another 100 square km (40 square mi) by 2030. Due to this rapid urbanization and expansion, there is a very little primary rainforest with Bukit Timah Nature Reserve being the only significant forest left.
