Social Conventions
Older generations in Sri Lanka tend to use the “namaste” greeting which involves palms clasped together as if in prayer at chin level with a slight nod, while younger generations tend to shake hands. Many women will only shake hands with men who are in their families. When visiting religious places or places of worship, people should be modestly dressed and legs and shoulders should be covered. Shoes will need to be removed before entering temples. When visiting homes, a small gift ie a souvenir from home is greatly appreciated.
Language
Sinhala is the main language of the Sinhalese who are the largest ethnic group in Sri Lanka. Tamil is a recognized language according to the constitution while English is also spoken.
Religion
Buddhism is the most followed religion in Sri Lanka and makes up 70% majority. Minority religions include Hinduism, Christianity and Islam.
