Thailand Geography and Maps
Located 15 degrees above the Equator, Thailand sits in the centre of Southeast Asia. It shares a border with Myanmar to the north and west, Laos to the north and east, and Cambodia to the east. With a population of 70,060,790, Thailand is divided into seventy-six political provinces with Bangkok being the political, commercial, industrial, and educational, as well as entertainment capital.
The geography of Thailand can be divided into four different regions: the western border, the northeastern border, the interior, and the south.
The western border is characterized by forested mountains that get higher toward the north. This part of the country experiences the coolest weather and is home to a great deal of wildlife. The highest peak in Thailand is Doi Inthanon at 2,565m (8,415 ft) found in the Chiang Mai province.
The northeastern border is made up of the Khorat Plateau and the Isan region. The Khorat Plateau extends south towards the Thai border with Cambodia while the Isan region is the most populous area in Thailand next to Bangkok.
The interior of Thailand is dominated by the central plains. The central plains are known as “the rice bowl of Asia” and support some of the world’s most fertile rice and fruit-growing areas.
To the south, Thailand runs into the Malaysian Peninsula with the Gulf of Thailand on the east coast and the Andaman Sea on the west coast. This means that Thailand benefits from having stunning beaches on opposing coasts. Popular tourist destinations like the islands of Phuket and Koh Samui are found in the south.
