Social Conventions

When visiting Vietnam, there are certain social conventions that should be followed to ensure a successful visit. Public displays of affection with members of the opposite sex should be avoided. Like many Asian cultures, the head is a very sacred part of the body in Vietnam and as such, should never be touched. When dining, guests should always wait to be shown where to sit as the oldest person is generally seated first. The most common utensils are chopsticks and a flat spoon and chopsticks should be placed on the table or on a chopstick rest after every few mouthfuls or when taking a drink or speaking. When visiting temples and other religious sites, shoes need to be removed before entering. Also, modest clothing should be worn. When taking photographs, always ask for permission as there are certain restrictions.

Language

Vietnamese is the official language of the country while English is the second language. French is spoken by some of the older generations in the south, while languages like Chinese Khmer and Cham are spoken by those who live in mountainous regions. There are fifty-four ethnic groups found in Vietnam and they each speak their own language.

Religion

With approximately 80% of the population regarding themselves as adherents to Buddhism, Vietnam is classed as a Buddhist country. Taoist, Confucian, Christianity, Hoa Hoa, Caodaism and Islam are also represented.
