Vietnam is the largest and most populated of the three Indochinese countries. It is located along the east coast of Indochina bordering Cambodia and Laos in the west and the People’s Republic of China to the north. The geography of Vietnam can be divided into four regions: the Highlands and the Red River Delta, the Central Mountains, the Coastal Lowlands and the Mekong River Delta.

The Highlands to the north and northwest of the country is inhabited mainly by tribal minority groups and are home to the country’s tallest peak, Fan Si Pan at 3,142m (10,308 ft). The Red River Delta is a flat, triangular region that spans 15,000 square kilometres, while the actual Red River runs for 1,200km (746mi). Within the Delta are a series of dykes and canals which help to irrigate the land which is rich in rice cultivation.

The Central Highlands consist of approximately 51,800 square kilometres of mountain peaks. These mountain ranges are covered in deep forests and makeup around 16% of the country’s arable land. The Central Highlands also has five plateaus that spread over the provinces of Dac Lac, Gia Lai and Kon Tom.

The Coastal Lowlands run from south of the Red River Delta all the way to the Mekong River Basin. As the name suggests, the lowlands are flat and are also quite narrow. The land within the Coastal Lowlands is very fertile and is farmed heavily for rice cultivation.

Finally, the Mekong River Delta is located in the southern region of the country. The region is covered in canals and rivers and the level plain of the delta covers approximately 40,000 square kilometres, with around 10,000 square kilometres being used for rice cultivation. This area is one of the major rice-growing regions in the world.
