Vietnam Weather
Although Vietnam falls into the tropics, the sheer length of the country means that various parts of the country belong to varying climatic zones. The northern part of the country is generally cooler than other regions in Southeast Asia and witnesses two seasons: winter and summer. The Winter months are from November to March and temperatures average around 17.2˚C (62.9˚F), however, the mountainous areas to the northwest are much colder. Summer months run from May to October and temperatures can rise to 37˚C (98.6˚F) in June and July.
The central part of the country is made up of the coastal lowlands and the central highlands. The coastal lowlands are usually drier and hotter than other areas during the summer. They experience the winter monsoon season from November to March. In the central highlands, the larger towns are comfortably cool all year while areas near the south coasts can witness hot weather with temperatures averaging between 21˚C-32˚C (70˚F-90˚F) all year, but also see nearly double the average rainfall of the country.
Southern Vietnam is only eight degrees above the Equator and therefore experiences a humid climate. Temperatures vary slightly and generally stay between 27-32˚C (80-90˚F) all year. The rainy season in the south is from May to November with downpours almost every afternoon, while the dry season is from late February to April.
