Australia is the smallest continent but is the sixth largest country in the world. Divided into six states (New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia) and two territories (Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory), the geography of the world’s largest island is incredibly diverse.
Located in Oceania, between the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific Ocean, Australia calls Indonesia, East Timor, Papua New Guinea, the Soloman Islands, Vanuatu, New Caledonia and New Zealand its neighbours. In terms of size, Australia is almost as large as the United States and is 32 times the size of the United Kingdom.
In this one continent are arid deserts, tropical rainforests, numerous snow-tipped mountain ranges, coral reefs, islands and alpine forests. Many animals and plants are endemic to and thrive in Australia thanks to its geographic isolation from the rest of the world. Due to its recognition as World Heritage Site, thankfully much of Australia’s landscape such as the Great Barrier Reef, the Blue Mountains Area and Ningaloo Reef is listed as protected.
