Located between the Coral Sea and the South Pacific Ocean, Papua New Guinea is made up of the eastern half of the Island of New Guinea, the islands of New Ireland, New Britain and Bougainville as well as neighbouring smaller islands. The country is one of least explored in the world, with many animal and plant species yet to be discovered.

The country is surrounded by protected coral reefs and is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire (the point of collision of several tectonic plates) which means there are many active volcanoes found there. Along with volcanoes, the island is home to the New Guinea Highlands. The Highlands are a mountain range that runs the width of the entire island of New Guinea from east to west. Standing at 14,793 ft, Mount Wilhelm is Papua New Guinea’s highest peak. It is interesting that many of the higher mountain ranges receive snowfalls - which is a rarity in the tropics.

The lowland and coastal areas are surrounded by dense rainforests and wetlands including the Sepik River which at 1,126 km is the longest in Papua New Guinea. The second longest river in Papua New Guinea is the Fly River at 1,050 km. Despite being the second longest in Papua New Guinea, it is actually the largest river in all of Oceania and is the largest river in the world without a single dam in its catchment.

The central core of the main island is characterized by deep green valleys that many remote and unknown villages call home.
