Social Conventions
Tahitians have a free and easy approach to life as well as an uninhibited lifestyle (topless sunbathing is not uncommon, though as always, take your cue from locals if you wish to indulge). “Beach-style” attire is worn throughout the islands and casual dress is standard. Most Tahitians greet each other with a handshake or a kiss on the cheek. They are known for their relaxed manner and a fine appreciation for beauty.
Language
French is the official language of French Polynesia. In a 2007 census, 68% of people aged 15 and older reported that the most common language spoken at home was French. 29.9% listed various Polynesian languages, 1.0% listed the Chinese language, and 0.6% listed others.
Each of the archipelagoes in French Polynesia has its own native language and English is taught as a third language in most schools. Hotel professionals, as well as activity staff, will speak English too.
Religion
The religion most identified within Tahiti is Christianity with 54% of the population belonging to various Protestant churches and a large minority (30%) being Catholic. People in Tahiti attend church regularly and many Polynesian traditional beliefs and mythology have been absorbed into the Christian faith.
Other faiths represented in Tahiti include the Maohi Protestant Church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and Jehovah’s Witness.
