French Polynesia is made up of 118 islands grouped into five different archipelagoes (the Marquesas Islands in the North, the Society Islands and the Tuamotu Islands in the centre, the Austral Islands in the South and the Gambiers to the South-East). In total, the islands span 4 million sq/km of the Pacific Ocean and are the above-water summits of old, underwater volcanoes.

The Marquesas Islands have a population of around 8,600 and are some of the most remote islands in the world. Combined, the islands have a land area of 1,049 sq km (405 sq mi), and unlike most Polynesian Islands, they are relatively dry.

The Society Islands, with a population of 227,807 are home to one of the most famous islands in French Polynesia - Tahiti. With a land area of 1,590 sq km (610 sq mi), the Society Islands are divided into two types: the Windward Islands and the Leeward Islands which include another famous tourist spot - Bora Bora.

The Tuamotu Islands have the largest chain of atolls in the world. The population of this archipelago is 18,317 and the islands cover a land area of 885 sq km (610 sq mi) - spanning roughly the size of Western Europe.

The Austral Islands are the southernmost group of islands and have a population of 6,300 people. The total land area of these islands is 148 sq km (57.1 sq mi) with many areas being uninhabited. These islands differ from others in French Polynesia because there are few lagoons and white sand beaches.

The Gambiers Islands are made up of two groups of islands: the Gambler Group and the Acteon Group. They span a total area of 31 sq km (12 sq mi) and have a population of 1,337.
