The area of Brazil covers almost half of the entire South American continent and it remarkably shares borders with all South American countries except for Ecuador and Chile. The country is divided into five official regions: Central-West, Northeast, North, Southeast and Southern Brazil.  These regions are then broken down into a further twenty-six states and a Federal District.

More than 60% of Brazil is plateaued and the topography of the country is relatively flat. The Brazilian Highlands cover most of the central, eastern and southern parts of the country and have average heights under 1,220 m (4,000 ft). Located in the southeast, Pico da Neblina stands at 3,014 m (9,888 ft) and is Brazil’s highest peak.

Brazil’s coast is to the east and borders the Atlantic Ocean. Much of the coast is characterized by the Great Escarpment which looks like a large imposing wall. Brazil’s shores are also made up of mangroves, lagoons, dunes and coral reefs.

Brazil hosts the majority of the Amazon Rainforest which provides a refuge for endangered species and it is believed that one in ten of the world’s known species can be found in the rainforest. Another famous part of Brazil’s geography is Pantanal, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that is shared with Bolivia and Paraguay. Pantanal is one of the world’s largest tropical wetland areas and offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.
