Best Time to Visit Guatemala
Guatemala has a tropical climate which allows visits year-round. It has two distinct seasons, wet and dry. Temperatures can vary depending on the elevation. Coastal areas tend to be hot all year round. On higher ground, you can experience warm days and cool nights. The dry season is from November to April with blue skies and sunshine and the wet from May to October with the most rain in September and October. Rain in the wet season only occurs for a couple of hours each day but there is an increase in humidity. Guatemala City, Antigua, Chichicastenango and Lake Atitlan experience a more temperate climate.
Events take place across the country on September 15 to mark Guatemala’s independence from Spain in 1821 with parades on the streets. In November, the Day of the Dead festival occurs at the start of the month when everyone celebrates the lives of their loved ones who have passed away. Graves are adorned with flowers and sugar skulls and people dress up in colourful costumes. Holy Week (March/April) is when colourful traditions can be observed in Antigua. Religious processions pass through streets.
