Food
Mexican food is famous the world over, not just in Mexico itself. While many believe that all Mexican food is characterized by its spiciness, in most cases, the spiciness is added when the food arrives at the table through chillies and salsas. Mexican dishes can take days to prepare, however, the staples of Mexican cuisine include simple ingredients like tortillas, beans, chilies, squash and tomatoes.
Popular dishes include:
Tacos al pastor: These are one of the most popular types of tacos found in Mexico. They are made up of thin strips of pork served on a corn tortilla and garnished with onions, coriander and pineapple.
Enchiladas: For this dish, both corn and flour tortillas can be used. Many fillings can be used including seafood, meat, cheese, beans, vegetables, or a combination of the above.
Guacamole: An incredibly famous dish, guacamole is made from mashed avocadoes, onions, tomatoes, lemon juice and chilli peppers.
Cochinita pibil: This dish is a specialty from the Yucatán Peninsula. It consists of a sucking pig marinated in citrus juices and a reddish dye. It is wrapped in banana leaves and is then slow-roasted in an underground pit.
Tamales: This ancient dish consists of corn dough stuffed with either a sweet or savoury filling (meat, cheese, fruits, vegetables, chillies). Once filled, these pockets are wrapped in either banana leaves or cornhusks and then steamed.
Drink
Coffee is one of Mexico’s most important exports and is a popular beverage in the country. Other world-famous drinks that come from Mexico include Tequila, the coffee liqueur Kahlúa, and popular beers such as Corona, Dos Equis (XX) and Sol.

Service charges don’t tend to be added to bills, as a result, a tip of around 15% is expected, or 20% if service is excellent.
