Social Conventions

Family is very important to the people of Nicaragua and large families are central to many communities. While the dress is casual in Nicaragua, personal appearance is very important and visitors should wear clean, neat and modest clothing. Skimpy clothing should be avoided especially if planning to visit churches or other holy places.

Language

Spanish is the official language of Nicaragua, however, along the Caribbean coast and parts of the Atlantic coastal plain, English and indigenous languages are spoken.

Religion

More than half of the population of Nicaragua (approximately 58%) identify themselves as being Roman Catholic. Other religions represented in the country include those who belong to Evangelical churches, Moravian churches and Jehovah’s Witnesses. There are also small communities of Jewish, Muslim and Mormon populations.
