What language is spoken in Nicaragua?

Spanish is the official language spoken in the western and central parts of the country. In the Caribbean regions, various languages are spoken: English, Creole, Garifuna, Miskito and Mayagna

Is English spoken in Nicaragua?

English is not widely spoken in Nicaragua except in more touristy areas. If traveling throughout Nicaragua and visiting more rural areas, learning some basic Spanish is recommended.

What currency is used in Nicaragua?

Nicaraguan currency is the Córdoba. US dollars are accepted throughout the country but it's recommended to have smaller bills and coins in local currency for smaller purchases.   

Do I need a visa to travel to Nicaragua?

Visitors from the United States and Canada do not need a visa for entry to Nicaragua for up to 90 days. Passports must be valid for a minimum of six months from the date of entry. 

When is the best time to travel to Nicaragua?

The best time to visit Nicaragua is from November to April as this is the dry season when the majority of the country sees more sunny days and milder temperatures.

Is there transportation within Nicaragua?

The most common form of transportation used is buses as there are a variety of bus options for various travel needs such as urban buses, express buses, suburban buses and Ruteados. 

Is Nicaragua a family-friendly destination?

Nicaragua is a great destination for more adventurous families as it has plenty of family-friendly hotels, resorts and child-friendly activities and is filled with great beaches and outdoor adventures.

How welcoming is Nicaragua to LGBTQ travellers and families?

Same-sex sexual activity has been legal since 2008 with some laws against discrimination. Managua and more touristy areas are more LGBTQ-friendly with many more gay-friendly bars and nightlife. Discretion and care are advised in more rural areas.

In Nicaragua, the common voltage is 120 V. The frequency is 60 Hz. The plugs and sockets are A / B type

Tipping

Tipping is not mandatory in Nicaragua but is welcome. It is not uncommon for restaurants to add a voluntary tip of 10% gratuity, so be sure to check your bill. Tipping etiquette is similar to that in Canada and the US of 10-15% for bartenders and waitresses, $2-5 for tour guides dependent on the size of the group, and $1-2 dollars for hotel staff like doormen and housekeeping. 

Events

Nicaragua has many festivals throughout the year; La Purisima and La Griteria (December), Semana Santa (the week leading up to Easter), and Rio San Juan Carnival  (January) are 3 of the biggest festivals in this country.
