In Austria, the currency used is the Euro. Major credit cards, including American Express, Visa and Mastercard are accepted at major retailers, hotels and restaurants. ATM’s are also widely available in Austria, particularly in major cities such as Salzburg and Vienna.

Do I need a visa to travel to Austria?

Citizens from Canada and the USA do not require a Visa to visit Austria for stays less than 90 days in a 180-day period. For stays longer than 90 days, a schengen visa is required.

When is the best time to travel to Austria?

The best time to visit Austria is during the spring and fall (April-May and September-October) when the temperatures are warm and the volume of tourists is lower. This is a perfect time to get out and explore all of the natural beauty Austria has to offer. Temperatures are suitable for hiking, and although the lakes may be on the cooler side, they make for a refreshing dip after a long hike. Thanks to the lack of crowds during this time, the cultural and historical sites will also be less busy.

Is there transportation within Austria?

Buses and tramways are the most common ways of getting around in Austria. The only city with metro is the capital, Vienna. Something to note is that all tickets for public transit must be purchased in advance. Taxis are widely available in Austria and they are reliable and relatively inexpensive. Cycling is also common. Some major cities have bikes for rent.

Is Austria a family friendly destination?

Austria offers many attractions that are suitable for both children and adults. When visiting sites in the cities and towns, there are a number of theme parks, interactive museums, zoos, indoor playgrounds and much more. If your family is interested in exploring the outdoors, Salzburg province is worth visiting for its mountains, waterfalls and lakes. There are plenty of mountain ranges (all varying in length and steepness), which make for perfect family hiking locations.
