Bulgaria Travel Information
Bulgaria is situated in the southeast corner of Europe divided by the Balkan Mountains which cut through the middle of the country. It also has 220 kilometres/355 miles of coastline along the Black Sea. The country has 3 national parks, 11 nature parks and 17 biosphere reserves. With a long history, Bulgaria was for 5 centuries, part of the Ottoman Empire until liberated by Russia. The country became a democratic constitution in 1991. It has a thriving wine industry and exports a large amount of its productivity. Bulgaria’s cuisine is heavily influenced by both Turkey and Greece.
The capital, Sofia, is situated in the west of the country and its architecture includes a range of styles from the Roman, Medieval and Soviet eras. Sofia is a cosmopolitan city with tree-lined boulevards and pleasant parks plus many interesting churches and cathedrals.
Bulgaria’s second-largest city, Plovdiv, has a long history dating back 6000 years making it one of the oldest cities in the world. Today, it is a picturesque city with many parks, gardens, museums and monuments. Of note are the 18th and 19th Century baroque houses and the 2nd Century BC Roman amphitheatre.
A town with a rich history is VelikoTurnovo which was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire. The city offers many museums and historical sites. It also has a vivacious nightlife probably brought about because of the students who belong to one of the largest universities in Bulgaria.
Situated on the Black Sea is the resort of Varna, the third largest city in Bulgaria and is a major tourist destination with fine sandy beaches. The Sea Garden here is the oldest and perhaps largest park in the country.
