Denmark Travel Information
Denmark, bordered by Germany, is a country made up of 443 islands of which 70 are inhabited with a population of around 5.6 million people. Technically Greenland and the Faroe Islands are part of the Kingdom of Denmark. The terrain is flat with little elevation and consists mainly of arable land. The largest area is the western peninsula of Jutland which contains the cities of Aarhus and Aalborg. The largest island is Zealand which includes the capital, Copenhagen. Denmark has often been cited as one of the most desirable countries in which to live.
There are 3 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Denmark. These are Roskilde Cathedral in Zealand, the burial site of many Danish monarchs, Kronborg Castle in Helsingor (Elsinore) just north of Copenhagen made famous in Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet and the Jelling Rune Stones in Jutland which date back to the Viking era.
The capital, Copenhagen, located in Zealand has a number of major attractions including its network of canals along which one can take a pleasant cruise, Amalienborg, the main residence of the Royal Family, Tivoli Gardens established in 1843, an amusement centre with something for everyone from rides to restaurants, the Little Mermaid, a renowned landmark located in the harbour and made famous by the Danish writer, Hans Christian Andersen, Nyhavn with its many canal-side restaurants and bars and Christiania, once a downtrodden squat, now a self-governing district in the city. World-famous Danish porcelain is made here better known as “Royal Copenhagen’ crystal.
On the peninsula of Jutland are two major cities, Aalborg and Aarhus. Aalborg is known as a laid-back city with an old-world charm. It is also known for its annual carnival. The history of this 1000-year-old city is depicted in the Historical Museum. Aarhus is a mix of contemporary and quaint. It is known as a dynamic metropolis with diverse museums/art galleries and great shopping. Also in Jutland is Legoland in the town of Billund which houses the world’s largest Lego model.
Denmark has produced some famous people including Hans Christian Anderson of fairytale fame, Kierkegaard the renowned philosopher, Karen Blixen, the writer, Carl Nielsen, the composer and Lars von Triers, the film director.
