France Geography & Maps
Covering an area of 551,695 square kilometres (213,000 square miles), France is the third largest country in Europe. Its size means that it has many coastlines and shares several borders. The North Sea, the English Channel, the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea all surround France while land borders include Belgium and Luxembourg in the northeast, Germany, Switzerland and Italy to the east, and Spain and Andorra in the southwest.
France is also responsible for overseas territories and regions outside of Europe. In the Caribbean, French administrative areas include Guadeloupe and Martinique. East of Madagascar is Réunion Island while Mayotte is an island in the Mozambique Channel. Finally, there is French Guiana on the northeast coast of South America.
The geography of France varies greatly depending on where one is. Flat plains and low rolling hills characterize northern and western parts of the country. To the south are the mountainous regions of the Pyrenees, while the Alps dominate the east. The highest peak in the country is Mont Blanc, which stands at 4,808 m (15,771 ft) and is located in the Alps.
