Food

The cuisine of Hungary is primarily based on the country’s main ethnic group, the Magyans who had originally come from the Central Asian Steppe. Traditional dishes are usually centred around meat, vegetables, fruits, bread and cheese. Hungarian food is also known for its spiciness due to the use of hot paprika. This paprika was the result of the Turkish influence in the country. There is also a sweeter version of paprika available for those who can’t handle the heat. Pork is the most popular meat cooked while fish is not a widely used ingredient due to the landlocked position of the country.

Popular dishes include:

Gundel Palacsinta: This dish is made up of pancakes that are served with walnuts, raisins, lemon rind and a chocolate sauce with rum.

Kelbász: This is a Hungarian sausage that is spiced with paprika.

Goulash: This is considered the national dish of Hungary and is often seen as a symbol of the country. It is made like soup but becomes more like a stew with potatoes, beef, paprika and sometimes Hungarian gnocchi added.

Lángos: This dish contains dough that is topped with shredded cheese, ham and garlic.

Töltött káposzta: These are Hungarian cabbage rolls (cooked cabbage leaves wrapped around a variety of fillings).

Drink

Hungary never really developed a beer culture of its own, however, European beers are available throughout the country. Instead of beer, there is a unique wine culture that is known for its sweet wine. In Hungary, the wine region is Tokaj-Hegyalja and it produces a world-famous dessert wine called Tokaj Aszú. Palinka is another alcoholic drink that is made with ingredients only found in Hungary. It is a smooth drink with a fruity taste and contains a 40% alcohol content. Finally, unicum is a liqueur flavoured with herbs and spices.
