Food

Traditionally known for pub and comfort food, recent decades have witnessed a shift in Irish cuisine as young chefs are emerging. Now, dishes tend to focus on local and fresh ingredients and creative and interesting recipes. With that being said, there is still much to be celebrated about a traditional Irish stew and other favourite recipes. On an island, seafood is a big part of Irish food. Fresh seafood is found on many restaurant menus and is caught locally and prepared straight away.

Popular dishes include:

Full Irish Breakfast: This is a staple of many Irish diets and is a massive meal. It is usually made up of a combination of the following foods: eggs, bacon, sausage, baked fresh tomatoes, fresh mushrooms, white and black pudding, fruit, bread, toast or scones.

Irish Stew: This meal is usually made with mutton, however, more modern recipes tend to favour lamb or beef. Regardless of the meat chosen, the stew is cooked with potatoes, onions, carrots and garlic.

Colcannon: The world colcannon means white-headed cabbage, and as such, this meal contains cabbage and mashed potatoes and is usually served with boiled ham or Irish bacon.

Dublin Lawyer: This dish consists of lobster that has been cooked in whiskey and cream.

Soda Bread: This bread is made from flour, bread soda, salt and buttermilk and often accompanies many meals in Ireland.

Drink

Beer remains the most popular drink in Ireland and there are several local varieties to choose from. The most famous of these brands are, of course, Guinness, brewed in Dublin. Other favourite brands to try include Smithwick’s, Kilkenny, Murphy’s and Beamish, and Irish ciders are also quite good.
