The Republic of Ireland is an island located in northwest Europe in the North Atlantic Ocean.  Since 1921, the island has been divided into two sections: six counties below Northern Ireland (which is part of Britain), while twenty-six counties belong to the independent republic.  The island is separated from Britain by the Irish Sea and from the continent by the Celtic Sea.

The main geographical features of Ireland include low central plains that are surrounded by a ring of coastal mountains. The highest point in the country is Carrauntoohil. It stands at 1,038 m (3,406 ft) and is found in the MacGillycuddys Reeks of Kerry mountain range. It is one of only three peaks in Ireland that reach over 1,000 m (3280.84 ft) in elevation.

The main river in Ireland is the River Shannon. At 386 km (240 mi), it is the longest river in either Ireland or Britain. Another major river in the country is the River Liffey which runs through the centre of Dublin, Ireland’s capital and largest city.

Ireland’s coasts are also home to many islands, the largest of which is Achill Island, located in the northwest. The Aran Islands are the next largest and they are located off the coast of Connacht. These islands are interesting because they host a Gaeltacht or Irish-speaking community.
