Lithuania Nature and Wildlife

  • Lithuania Nature and Wildlife

Nature and wildlife in all the regions of Lithuania are protected in its five national parks. The Curonian Spit National park is the best-known. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a 98 kilometre/62 mile long narrow Baltic Sea peninsula which actually spans two countries, Lithuania and Russia. It is unique both naturally and culturally. The sand dunes are backed by pine forests. Activity-wise, there is the ability to go hiking, swimming, sailing and cycling as well as come across wild animals that roam the forests.

The national parks of Aukstaitija and Samogitia are well known for their lakes and are very popular in the summer. Lake Plateliai in the Samogitia National park is the largest lake in Lithuania. Lake Tauragnas in the Aukstaitijan National Park is the deepest. Aukstaitija has many lakes outside the national park area.

The Dzkija National Park in the southeast is covered by a dense forest. It is a popular place to gather berries and mushrooms as well as kayaking in its streams.

The Trakai National Park is dedicated to the historically important Trakai town rather than natural scenery. However, it has numerous lakes which are popular with visitors especially because they are easily reached from Vilnius.

Unlike some of their Western counterparts, the Lithuanian National Parks are not completely devoid of human habitation. Homes do exist including wooden fishermen huts in the Curonian Spit. Limitations on new construction mean that the villages within the park limits remain more authentic.

In these parks, you may see wild animals such as rabbits, foxes, boars, deer and elks. There are also many sanctuaries to view birds.
