Luxembourg Introduction

Officially, it is called the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It is located between luxembourg to the west and north, Germany to the east and France to the south. There are 3 languages spoken, namely French, German and a dialect of German called Luxembourgish. In everyday life, road signs are only in French and English speakers are quite common. It is one of the smallest countries in Europe with a population of just under 600,000 of which foreign nationals make up 48% of the population, the majority of which are working for International concerns. Luxembourg is only 82 kilometres/51 miles long and 57 kilometres/35 miles wide. It has an advanced economy and one of the world's highest GDP per capita.

Luxembourg can easily be reached from most other nearby European destinations and there is a high-speed train service from Paris. The terrain of Luxembourg is mostly gently rolling uplands with broad, shallow valleys and is mountainous in the north in the Ardennes region. The Moselle River is one of the major rivers of Luxembourg. Its trajectory along the Luxembourg border forms a natural boundary with Germany. The attractions of the country include its architecture, its history, its culture and its gastronomy. Outside of the capital, Luxembourg, there is scenic, picturesque countryside, forests, fortresses and castles and some small but fascinating towns.

The capital is the City of Luxembourg due to its historic buildings is a UNESCO World Heritage site distinguished by its extensive city walls and towers. The city is divided into Ville Haute ("High City"), the medieval town core and Ville Basse ("Low City"). Interesting places include the Gothic Revival Cathedral of Notre Dame, the town fortifications and the Grand Ducal Palace which houses the Luxembourgish Parliament, the Chamber of Deputies and which is surrounded by charming cobblestoned lanes. Neumunster Abbey is a former Benedictine abbey, now a public meeting place and cultural centre. The Place d'Arms is a major square surrounded by cafes. The Casemates Bock is a network of underground fortifications built in the 18th century. There are also several war memorial sites including the World War II Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial. The pedestrianized old town is where the greatest concentration of shops as well as bars and restaurants are to be found.

Outside of the city are a number of almost fairy-tale like castles and fortresses. The lively town of Echternach is the oldest city in Luxembourg. It has the country's most prominent religious structure, the Basilica of the Abbey of Echternach where the country's patron saint Willibrord is buried. It is a good place to explore the beautiful Mullerthal, better known as "Little Switzerland". Here you can hike or bike through dense forests with many streams. In the romantic village of Vianden, the medieval Beaufort Castle is well worth a visit. You can visit the Victor Hugo House and spend time at the pleasant cafes of the Grand Rue. The town of Remich is handy for the Route du Vin where many fine wines are produced in the Moselle Valley. It is home to one of the most beautiful valleys in Luxembourg and is famous for its wineries, charming hotels and medieval towns.
