Social Conventions

The Maltese people are very friendly, welcoming and hospitable. It is important to remember that Roman Catholicism plays a major role in life on the islands and as such, clothing should be conservative when attending church services and shoulders and legs should be covered. Also, wearing skimpy clothing away from beaches and pools is not really appropriate. Finally, smoking is prohibited on public transport and in many public buildings.

Language

English and Maltese are the official languages in Malta, however, Italian is also spoken.

Religion

The majority of Maltese people are Roman Catholics, but other religious denominations are represented including Anglican, Church of Scotland, Greek Orthodox, Judaism, Methodist and Islam.
